"When are you speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of famous fans have also begged for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"So anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the band will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
