A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A small number of other platform users also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are growing concerned.
A new rule introduced on Monday seeks to ban government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
